When you are headed for nice weather and that much-needed vacation, the last thing you want is for your holiday to be spoiled by mosquitoes. In addition to the annoyance of itchy bites, mosquitoes are capable of spreading dangerous diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and the Zika virus. Some of the ways to avoid mosquito bites during your travels include the following:
Avoid Mosquito Hot Spots
Be sure to check if your holiday destination is a hot spot for mosquito activity, and is one of the areas where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent. Information is available by such organizations as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The World Health Organization.
Wear Light Colors
Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. Wearing light-colored clothing is a good way to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. However, it is also a good idea to stay away from bright colors, as these are known to attract stinging insects such as wasps. Stick to neutral and pastel-colored clothing if possible.
Use Insect Repellent
Use insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites. Insect repellents work and are available at most supermarkets and drugstores. Apply the repellent to any exposed areas of your skin. Be sure to apply insect repellent before leaving your hotel especially during the later parts of the day. Depending on the strength of the repellent you use, apply frequently or as needed.
