Travelers Guide: Protect Yourself From Diseases

The holiday season is coming up, if you are visiting family and friends in areas with chikungunya, dengue, or Zika you are at risk of getting those diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created a guideline of how to prevent insect-borne diseases.

Before you learn how to protect yourself from these diseases, it is important that you understand what the diseases are.

• Chikungunya is a mosquito-transmitted disease. Symptoms include headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling, rash, fever, and joint pain. The symptoms can be disabling. Most people feel better within a week, however, some people experience joint paint for years.
• Dengue is a mosquito-transmitted disease. Symptoms range from fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, and pain in the eyes, joints, and muscles. Symptoms don’t show up immediately after a mosquito bite. In fact, it takes up to two weeks to develop.
• Zika spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito. The virus causes serious birth defects and is associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome. There is no vaccine to prevent Zika, so it is very important to prevent bug bites. Since Zika can spread through sex, it is highly necessary for pregnant women and those hoping to get pregnant to take necessary precautions.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika are transmitted via a mosquito bite. In order to prevent bites, follow these tips:

• Cover exposed skin.
• Use Environmental Protection Agency registered insect repellents.
• Use permerthrin-treated clothing.
• Sleep in screened-in, air-conditioned rooms.
• Utilize a mosquito bed net.
